The Ndi Igbo Buru’Otu Association of Nigeria has donated food items worth ₦1 million and cash gifts of ₦200,000 to the Foundation for Hope in Disability in Ikotun, Lagos State, as part of its annual humanitarian outreach to vulnerable members of society.

The donation was presented during a courtesy visit to the foundation, where members of the association interacted with the children and management, reaffirming their commitment to supporting persons with disabilities and promoting the welfare of the less privileged.

Speaking during the visit, the founder of the association, Eze Amb. Dr. Chika Nwokedi, said the initiative was part of the organisation’s longstanding commitment to alleviating poverty and bringing relief to vulnerable people. He explained that the association, which is marking its 11th year, had consistently supported orphanages, widows, widowers and other disadvantaged groups through its humanitarian programmes.

Nwokedi disclosed that the association had resolved to extend its support to the Foundation for Hope in Disability beyond the one-off donation, with plans to include it among beneficiaries of periodic financial assistance and annual gifts. He stressed that persons with disabilities required sustained support to improve their living conditions and opportunities.

He also encouraged wealthy Nigerians and other well-meaning individuals to embrace philanthropy, noting that acts of kindness should not be limited by the amount of money available. According to him, everyone can make a difference by supporting people in need within their communities.

Similarly, Chief Dr. Ambassador Godswill Chukwuemeka Ogbuka, Vice President of Ndi Igbo Buru’Otu Association of Nigeria, said the visit was part of the association’s commitment to fighting poverty, supporting vulnerable people and restoring hope to those in need.

He explained that the humanitarian outreach was enshrined in the association’s constitution, with members committed to visiting the foundation once or twice a year to bring happiness and support to the beneficiaries. Ogbuka expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the less privileged, noting that witnessing their circumstances reinforces the need for compassion, generosity and thankfulness.

The General Secretary of the association, Chief Comrade Ifeanyi Igwegbe, said caring for the less privileged remained one of the organisation’s core objectives since its establishment. He noted that the association had maintained its annual visits to charitable institutions while also empowering widows and widowers, adding that its members contributed voluntarily to fund the programmes.

Similarly, the association’s Public Relations Officer, Oluchi Cynthia Amaefula, expressed concern over the challenges confronting the children and commended the foundation’s management for its efforts. She said the association was impressed by the vocational training provided to the beneficiaries, including shoemaking, hairdressing and tailoring, which could help them acquire practical skills and become more self-reliant.

Lolo Okeoma Nkiru Mary, a foundation member of Ndi Igbo Buru’Otu Association of Nigeria, said the association, under the chairmanship of Dr. C.C. Nwokedi, makes the annual visit every October as part of its humanitarian outreach. She added that the association also supports members who are widows and widowers with food items.

Nkiru expressed joy at the visit, noting that it reminded her of the importance of compassion, gratitude and respect for human dignity. She emphasised that people living with disabilities should not be judged, as their conditions may arise from circumstances beyond their control. She added that being healthy and physically complete is a privilege that should be appreciated as a gift from God.

In her remarks, the founder of the Foundation for Hope in Disability, Mrs Blessing Abraham, said the organisation was established in 2007 to give hope to persons with physical disabilities and help them develop the skills needed to earn a living. She explained that the foundation combines education with vocational training, including hairdressing, fashion design and shoemaking, but identified a shortage of equipment as one of its major challenges.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the association’s Charity Committee, Chief Chibuike Ogwuegbe, said the annual outreach was enshrined in the organisation’s objectives to ensure that vulnerable people were not neglected. He explained that members began contributing towards the exercise months in advance, stressing that participation was voluntary and driven by their shared commitment to humanitarian service. The association said it would sustain its charitable activities, including planned assistance to widows and widowers ahead of the Christmas season.
