NAWOJ Lagos Honours WSCIJ CEO Motunrayo Alaka as June ‘Iconic Woman of the Month’

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, has honoured the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), Motunrayo Alaka, as its “Iconic Woman of the Month” for June, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to journalism, press freedom and women’s empowerment.
The association said the honour acknowledges Alaka’s decades of exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment to investigative journalism, and sustained efforts to advance gender equity within the media profession in Nigeria and across Africa.
According to NAWOJ Lagos, Alaka has played a pivotal role in strengthening investigative reporting through her leadership at the WSCIJ, while also championing initiatives that have empowered women journalists to excel professionally.
One of such initiatives, the Report Women! project, has equipped numerous female journalists with the skills, mentorship and opportunities required to assume leadership positions and contribute meaningfully to the media industry.
Speaking on the recognition, Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Jumoke Falayi Johnson, described Alaka as a symbol of resilience, integrity and visionary leadership whose contributions continue to shape the journalism profession.

“Motunrayo Alaka is not just a leader; she is a builder of people and a beacon of integrity in the media landscape. Her dedication to fostering gender equity and mentoring the next generation of investigative journalists makes her a thoroughly deserving recipient of this honour for the month of June,” Johnson said.
She explained that the NAWOJ Lagos ‘Iconic Woman of the Month’ initiative was established to celebrate exceptional Nigerian women who have distinguished themselves through remarkable achievements, broken barriers and made lasting impacts in their various professions.
Johnson noted that Alaka now joins the league of distinguished recipients of the recognition, including Reverend Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi, Dr. Abimbola Abosede Oyetunde, Mrs. Sola Salako-Ajulo, Professor Abigail Ogwezzy Ndisika, and the late Alhaja Kudirat Olayinka Abiola, who was honoured posthumously.
NAWOJ Lagos congratulated Alaka on the recognition and expressed confidence that she would continue to make even greater contributions to journalism, media development and the empowerment of women.
The congratulatory message was jointly signed by the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Jumoke Falayi Johnson, and the association’s Secretary, Anu M. Thomas.
