Democracy Day: APPMEN Urges Leaders to Strengthen Institutions, Protect Press Freedom

ABUJA — The Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishment of Nigeria (APPMEN) has called on political leaders and key stakeholders to consolidate Nigeria’s democratic gains by strengthening institutions, safeguarding press freedom, and prioritizing the welfare of citizens as the country marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
The call was made by the National Coordinator of APPMEN and Publisher/CEO of The Parliament Diary Newspaper, Chief Precious Enebuse, in a statement issued on Friday to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration.
Enebuse noted that while the country’s democratic journey since 1999 has witnessed significant progress, including expanded civic participation and sustained electoral processes, there remains an urgent need for deeper reforms to ensure that democracy delivers tangible benefits to Nigerians.
According to him, “Democracy at 27 is a milestone worth celebrating, but it must also be a moment of honest reflection. The strength of our democracy will not be measured by longevity alone, but by the quality of governance, accountability of leadership, and the wellbeing of Nigerians.”
The APPMEN coordinator stressed the need for stronger democratic institutions, urging the National Assembly, Judiciary, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and anti-corruption agencies to operate independently and without undue interference.
He maintained that democracy can only thrive when institutions are allowed to function effectively, emphasizing that the nation’s democratic future should be anchored on strong institutions rather than individuals.
On press freedom, Enebuse described the private media as a critical watchdog in any democratic society and called on government officials at all levels to resist actions capable of undermining media independence.

He warned against censorship, intimidation, and policies that could economically weaken independent media organizations, noting that a free press remains essential for transparency and accountability in governance.
The APPMEN National Coordinator also urged governments across the country to focus on addressing insecurity and improving citizens’ welfare through policies that reduce poverty, expand access to quality healthcare and education, and guarantee the protection of lives and property.
He further advocated greater national unity and inclusiveness, saying Nigeria’s diversity should be leveraged as a strength through policies that promote equity, justice, and a sense of belonging among all ethnic and regional groups.
Enebuse commended Nigerians, civil society organizations, and media practitioners for their commitment to democratic ideals through advocacy, vigilance, and sacrifice over the years.
He also encouraged citizens to remain actively involved in the democratic process by holding public officials accountable and defending democratic values within their communities.
Reaffirming APPMEN’s commitment to nation-building, Enebuse said the association would continue to champion responsible journalism and provide platforms that promote public dialogue, transparency, and truth.
“Democracy thrives where information is free and facts are respected,” he stated.
The media proprietors’ association further urged the Presidency, state governors, the legislature, and other stakeholders to use the 27th anniversary of democratic rule as an opportunity to recommit themselves to the ideals of June 12, including justice, transparency, accountability, and service to the people.
