Delta Police Demote Two Officers Over POS Extortion, Reaffirm Ban on Electronic Payments in Stations

The Delta State Police Command has demoted two police officers after they were found guilty of extorting a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction inside a police station, reaffirming the Inspector-General of Police’s strict ban on electronic payment transactions in police formations.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Yemi Oyeniyi, approved the outcome of an orderly room trial involving Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim of ‘C’ Division, Asaba, who were captured in a viral video receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the station on January 13, 2026.
According to the Command, the officers were found guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
Following the disciplinary proceedings, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Miracle Ehirim was demoted to Constable.
Reacting to the development, CP Oyeniyi reiterated the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, zero-tolerance policy against extortion and all forms of professional misconduct within the Nigeria Police Force.

He stressed that the IGP has expressly prohibited the use of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals and other electronic payment platforms in police stations and formations across the country, warning that no police officer is authorized to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise.
The Commissioner warned that any officer found violating the directive would face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the law and the Force’s internal regulations.
He further urged officers and men of the Delta State Command to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens, noting that the sanctions imposed on the affected officers should serve as a deterrent to others.
CP Oyeniyi reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to discipline, accountability and restoring public confidence in policing, while encouraging members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311.
