Delta Police, CSOs Pledge Stronger Collaboration on Human Rights, Public Safety
By Naomi Onome
The Delta State Police Command and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have pledged to strengthen collaboration on human rights protection, police accountability and public safety.
The commitment was made on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, during an interactive meeting and luncheon hosted by the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, at the Officers’ Mess in Asaba.
The engagement, held in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, was aimed at strengthening police-community relations and promoting constructive dialogue between the Police and civil society stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo, Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Human Rights, described the meeting as a wake-up call for stronger cooperation between the Police and civil society.
Ejumudo stressed that both institutions should be regarded as partners rather than adversaries, noting that they share a responsibility to protect the public and promote a peaceful society.
He called for improved accessibility to police authorities and prompt responses to complaints, while warning against the dangers of misinformation and its potential consequences, citing the EndSARS protests as an example.

Comrade Efemena Akhima, in his remarks, cautioned human rights advocates against disseminating false or unverified information, particularly on social media.
He emphasised the importance of accuracy, integrity and responsible communication in efforts to promote human rights and hold public institutions accountable.
Responding to issues raised during the engagement, CP Erale acknowledged the important role of civil society organisations in promoting accountability and strengthening public confidence in the Police.
The police commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, respect for fundamental human rights and zero tolerance for extortion and other forms of misconduct by police personnel.
He also assured participants that the Command would work towards improving accessibility, giving prompt attention to legitimate complaints and sustaining engagement with civil society stakeholders.
Erale said the Command remained committed to building a relationship with civil society based on mutual trust, transparency and shared responsibility for maintaining peace and security across Delta State.
The meeting forms part of efforts to deepen cooperation between the Police and non-governmental stakeholders in addressing public safety concerns, promoting respect for human rights and strengthening accountability in policing.
