Children’s Day 2026: APPMEN Advocates Stronger Protection for Children’s Rights, Welfare, Safety

As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, the Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishment of Nigeria (APPMEN) has called for renewed commitment towards protecting the rights, welfare, and safety of children across the country.

In a statement signed by the National Coordinator of APPMEN, Chief Precious Enebuse, the association stressed that children remain the foundation of Nigeria’s future and must be given the necessary support and opportunities to thrive.

The association lamented that despite the significance of children in nation-building, many Nigerian children still face serious challenges affecting their health, education, security, and overall well-being.

According to APPMEN, the annual Children’s Day celebration should serve as a reminder that safeguarding children is not an act of charity but a collective responsibility that must be embraced by families, communities, governments, civil society groups, and the media.

Speaking further, Chief Enebuse emphasized the need for stakeholders to uphold the Child Rights Act and ensure that every child has access to quality healthcare, education, and legal protection regardless of social status, location, or background.

The association also called for greater attention to child welfare issues, including nutrition, immunization, and mental health, pledging that media proprietors under APPMEN would continue to use their various platforms to promote awareness, accountability, and advocacy for children-related matters.

On the issue of safety, APPMEN urged authorities to strengthen policies and actions against child abuse, trafficking, exploitation, and unsafe environments, while also advocating responsible media reporting that protects the dignity and privacy of children.

The statement further noted that beyond basic survival, children should be empowered with opportunities in skills development, sports, arts, and moral education to help shape them into responsible citizens and future leaders.

APPMEN commended teachers, healthcare workers, parents, civil society organizations, and media practitioners working tirelessly to improve the lives of children across Nigeria.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to using the media as a tool for advocacy, education, and positive social change, particularly at the grassroots level.

“On this Children’s Day, let us move beyond celebration to genuine commitment. When children are protected, healthy, and empowered, Nigeria becomes stronger,” the statement added.
