Akume Moves to End Benue APC Crisis, Secures Unity Ahead of 2027

By Primetime Reports

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and leader of the North Central political bloc, Senator George Akume, has successfully brokered peace among warring factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, ending years of internal party crisis.

The breakthrough followed a high-level stakeholders’ meeting convened on Sunday, which brought together key political actors across the divide, including Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and aggrieved party stakeholders.

The reconciliation is seen as a major turning point in the protracted leadership struggle that had weakened the APC in the state since after the 2023 general elections.

At the heart of the crisis were disagreements over control of party structures and political appointments, which eventually snowballed into deep factional divisions.

The party split into rival camps, with one faction led by Austin Agada and another aligned with former state chairman Ben Omakolo in support of Governor Alia.
The conflict further escalated in March 2026 when both sides held parallel congresses, producing separate executive committees and heightening tension within the party.

However, Akume’s intervention reportedly shifted the tide, as he moved to rebuild trust among stakeholders and prioritised party unity over personal or factional interests.

As part of the reconciliation framework, Akume proposed automatic tickets for elected officials, including the governor and serving legislators, as a stabilising measure ahead of future elections.

Party insiders say the move is aimed at reducing internal rivalry, strengthening cohesion within the APC, and positioning the party for electoral success in 2027 and beyond, including support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

With the peace accord now sealed, stakeholders say attention has shifted to sustaining the fragile unity, as Akume’s intervention is widely viewed as a decisive step in restoring stability to the APC in Benue State and reinforcing his role as a key stabilising force in the Middle Belt.
