Lagos orders the closure of Dowen College after Oromoni’s death

The Lagos state government has ordered Dowen College in Lekki to be closed indefinitely due to the issue surrounding the murder of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.
For declining to join a cult, the 12-year-old was allegedly assaulted by “several senior workers.”
The student’s father, who shares his son’s surname, stated that the allegations surrounding his death were “real.”

He further alleged that his son was fed a liquid substance and coerced into remaining silent about the incident.
The school, on the other hand, had previously disregarded the allegation, claiming that he had just been injured while playing football with his classmates.
Folasade Adefisayo, the commissioner of education, declared an indefinite shutdown of Dowen College following a meeting with the institution’s administration and workers on Friday.
“The Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Dowen College, Lekki, pending the outcome of an investigation into the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, a student at the school,” said Ganiu Lawal, the Lagos state ministry of education’s spokeswoman.
“After a meeting with the School Management and Staff, Commissioner for Education Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo announced the closure.”
“The Commissioner urged calm and stated that no effort will be spared in determining the cause of the occurrence.”
Dowen College had published a letter to parents about its preparations to close for two days when she made her announcement.
“We have advised that our kids stay home tomorrow, Friday 3rd, and Monday 6th, in light of the current situation concerning the school and considering the feelings of the students,” it had said.

“This will also give the pupils time to prepare for their upcoming exams, which will begin next week.”
As investigations continue, it is understood that the late boy’s parents have mobilized to protest his death.
