Explosive Allegations: LASUSTECH VC Accused of N2 Billion Fraud, Demand for Suspension Mounts

A storm is brewing at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) as a prominent human rights coalition, the United Action for Democracy (UAD), has launched a scathing attack on the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya. The UAD is demanding his immediate suspension amidst explosive allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and abuse of office totaling a staggering N2 billion.
In a fiery press statement, the UAD claims this colossal sum, earmarked for crucial academic department accreditation, has been “grossly mismanaged” by Professor Odusanya in alleged collusion with LASUSTECH’s Head of Procurement and Auditor. The coalition warns that these actions are not only jeopardizing the university’s integrity but could trigger a “full-blown institutional collapse” if not addressed urgently.
“Several law enforcement agencies, including the EFCC and the Lagos State Police Command, have been notified and are reportedly investigating the matter,” stated Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, UADās General Secretary. However, he cautioned, “the Vice Chancellorās continued presence in office threatens the credibility of the probe and could obstruct justice.”
The detailed allegations paint a grim picture, including:
* Alleged violation of Lagos State Procurement Law by bypassing due process,Collusion to award contracts to companies with personal links to the accused.Arbitrary inflation of contract values, resulting in reported losses exceeding N800 million,Use of the universityās Wema Bank account for questionable financial activities.
The UAD sounded a grave warning about the potential for widespread unrest within the university community, stating that anger among academic staff, non-academic staff, and students is reaching a “tipping point” that could ignite mass protests.
During a press briefing, frustration was palpable regarding the perceived silence and inaction from security agencies and the Lagos State government. “Since we raised these issues, not one resolution has been communicated to us by any of the agencies. How long will we continue like this?” questioned Jeremy, a student activist, highlighting the growing impatience.
The UAD’s demands are clear and uncompromising:
* Immediate suspension of Prof. Odusanya,appointment of an interim administration to oversee the university,A full forensic audit of the N2 billion accreditation fund,*Prosecution of all individuals found culpable in the alleged fraud,An end to any form of victimization against whistleblowers and staff who have spoken out.
“Academic institutions should be pillars of integrity, not reflections of our corrupt political system,” declared Ajayi. “The time for action is now. Lagosians must demand accountability from their government before our educational future is irreparably damaged.”
This urgent call for action comes amid mounting concerns over corruption within Nigeria’s education sector and significantly increases pressure on Lagos State authorities to respond decisively to these serious allegations. The UAD is specifically urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to launch an independent investigation into the petition against Professor Odusanya and the institution’s Head of Procurement.
