Ex-INEC chair Jega warns, 2023 election may not take place due to insecurity

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, has lamented Nigeria’s state of insecurity.
Jega warned that if the current insecurity is not addressed immediately, the general elections in 2023 may be canceled.

On Thursday, he issued the warning at an event in Ibadan honoring the late former governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi.
Insecurity, according to the former INEC boss, poses a serious threat to the conduct of the general elections in 2023.
He insisted that adequate security was essential for a successful election.
“Unless elections are held in a peaceful and secure environment, the integrity and even legitimacy of the election’s outcome will be called into question,” Jega says.
“As we look forward to the general elections in 2023, there is growing concern that the country’s pervasive insecurity will present a formidable obstacle, if not an obstruction, to those elections.”

“Security challenges would pose the most serious threat to the integrity of the election process if it even allows the election to be conducted if they are not appropriately and effectively mitigated.”
