Delta Police Arrest Wanted Cult Suspect, Recover Four Locally Made Guns

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a suspected cultist who had been on its wanted list over the alleged shooting of a former cult member in Jesse, Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Oghenebuba Mamatime, was apprehended by operatives of the Jesse Division in collaboration with community youths following intelligence gathered after a complaint by the victim, whose identity was withheld.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the victim reported that he had been shot by the suspect, prompting a coordinated operation that led to Mamatime’s arrest on July 21, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m.
During the operation, police recovered three locally fabricated pistols and one locally made single-barrel gun from the suspect.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mamatime is an alleged member of the Eiye Confraternity and was reportedly angered by the victim’s decision to renounce cultism. Police said an argument ensued between the two, during which the suspect allegedly shot the victim in an attempt to force him back into the cult group.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.
Commending the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, praised the collaboration between officers of the Jesse Division and community youths, describing it as a model for effective community policing.
He urged residents to sustain the partnership in tackling other crimes, including drug abuse, kidnapping and related criminal activities.
The police commissioner also advised young people across the state to stay away from cultism and other unlawful activities, warning that the command would continue to intensify efforts against criminal elements.
