Delta CP Oyeniyi Seeks Stronger Police-Legislative Partnership During Courtesy Visit to State Assembly

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips, paid a courtesy visit to the Delta State House of Assembly as part of ongoing stakeholder engagements aimed at strengthening community policing and enhancing security across the State.

Speaking during the visit, the Commissioner of Police stated that the engagement was in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, who has emphasised the need for active collaboration with critical stakeholders in advancing community policing initiatives. He described the Delta State House of Assembly as a key partner in the collective effort to improve public safety and security.

CP Oyeniyi called for legislative support, particularly in strengthening laws that would facilitate the speedy prosecution of drug traffickers and other criminal offenders. He noted that many crimes occurring within riverine and rural communities are often localised but pose significant threats to security and development. According to him, rural communities remain the backbone of the nation’s economy and therefore deserve adequate security attention.

The CP further reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined institution committed to professionalism, accountability, and service. He assured the Speaker and members of the House that the Delta State Command under his leadership would continue to uphold discipline while protecting the lives, property, and fundamental rights of all citizens. He added that the Command remains committed to diligent service and sustained collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the State.

In his response, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor welcomed the Commissioner of Police to Delta State and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver on his mandate. He stated that the visit had further strengthened the House’s confidence in the Police and its commitment to providing effective security services.

The Speaker assured the CP of the continued support of the House, noting that the cordial relationship enjoyed by previous leadership of the Police would be sustained. He pledged the Legislature’s readiness to work closely with the Command in addressing challenges such as drug abuse, cultism, and other forms of criminality.

He further stated that the House would continue to provide the necessary legislative backing and cooperation required to support the Command’s security objectives, while encouraging closer collaboration between the Police and the Legislature in the interest of peace, security, and development in Delta State.
