Some children are out of school in Nigeria because of N80 levy — Pres. Buhari’s aide.

Maryam Uwais, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, says some children in Nigeria are out of school because they can’t afford to pay N80 levy.

Nigeria’s out-of-school-children figure stands at 20 million according to recent data by UNESCO.

The statistics showed that India, Nigeria & Pakistan have the highest number of out-of-school children globally between ages 6 & 18.

Speaking in an interview with ChannelsTelevision, Maryam said: “We have a population that is growing faster than our economy, & we are not targeting those issues that are increasing the numbers.

I will give you an example; I was in a northern state, I saw 13 children playing & I asked them, ‘Why aren’t you in school? They said they aren’t in school because of N80 as Parent Levy.

Now, if we can use such information, it can be tackled at the state government level because these are hidden levies that impact the ability to go to school.”
