Chief Sunday Udeh, the President of the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos, has denied allegations that Igbo culture has been commercialised and destroyed, claiming that the Ezendigbo title is legally recognised in Nigeria.
Udeh clarified that the Igbo Community was established by law, enabling them to crown the Ezendigbo and issue certificates per their constitution. He criticised an online media outlet for alleging abuse of customs and expressed concern over the proliferation of self-proclaimed kingmakers complicating the identification of legitimate titles.
Udeh emphasized the need for a system to distinguish genuine titles to preserve the integrity of the Igbo traditional institution. He also defended the practice of crowning multiple Ezendigbo in a locality due to high population demands and denied involvement in controversies surrounding the Obi of Lagos, expressing confusion over his arrest and the accusations against him.
Many members of the Ndigbo community have questioned the validity of the charges against him, stating the crowning is strictly an Igbo matter. The detention of Chief Sunday Udeh appears to have given rise to an uproar as to how Igbos are being treated in Lagos especially since the last 2023 General Elections where it is perceived that Igbos have maliciously chosen other presidential candidates from other parties rather than the candidate from the ruling party APC whom must have anticipated massive support from residents of Lagos State regardless of the tribe.
This situation, Igbos assume, has led to multiple arrests of Igbo leaders and residents over settleable issues that warrant clear explanations, as seen in recent times when Chief Sunday Udeh issued a certificate of approval to install the Obi of Lagos, which simply means the leader of Igbos in Lagos.
The various Igbo leaders from diverse local governments in Lagos called Ezendigbo are simply created to chaperone the Igbos in a particular jurisdiction particularly to ensure that they abide by the laws of Lagos State as non-indegenes.
The recent situation which gave rise to the arrest and detention of Chief Sunday Udeh and others at the Order of a Lagos State High court, over alleged issuance of Certificate and coronation of an Obi Of Lagos State further fueled the suspicion of anarchy melted out on the Igbos without listening ears by the authorities on what these titles truly mean.
To counter a recent publication flying around describing Chief Sunday Udeh’s leadership as an unusual, problematic and controversial one, it is worthy of note that Chief Udeh faces significant criticism from Eze Ndigbo leaders for his controversial commercialisation of Eze Ndigbo titles in Lagos, prompting silent sympathy from some beneficiaries due to fear of backlash. Many Ezes accuse him of jeopardising longstanding Igbo customs and creating fake Ezeship kingdoms, inciting tension within the community. They claim he has sold titles to questionable characters, resulting in multiple Eze Ndigbo title holders across various localities, such as Amuwo Odofin and Ibeju Lekki, undermining the integrity of the traditional institution.
It should be noted that Chief Sunday Udeh is not the only President General of the Igbo-speaking community who crowned the lots in Eze-ship; his predecessors also crowned a good number of Ezes in Lagos, while the other arm of the sociocultural organisation, namely ‘Ohaneze Ndigbo’, also coronated many Ezes too. His tenure only just officially began after his former rivalry partner, Chief Sunday Eze, stepped down for him to emerge through a peaceful resolution. Many of the Igbo leaders (Ezendigbo) in Lagos are old timers who’ve served in their capacity in Lagos state as the mouthpiece of the Igbos to ensure they do not trespass in another man’s land.
The publication titled “OBI OF LAGOS: Discordant Tones, As Many Ezes Jubilate, Some Sympathise, Others Accuse Detained Igbo Speaking President General, Chief Sunday Udeh, Of Abuse Of Customs, Mischievous Commercialising Eze Ndigbo Title In Lagos State” is not only malicious but orchestrated to smear the name of Chief Sunday Udeh by embittered Ndigbo who have no relevance in uplifting the sociocultural organisation “Igbo Speaking Community” but forget that this situation might become theirs tomorrow if not addressed.
The next hearing at the Lagos State High Court in the case of Chief Sunday Udeh and the others, stipulated for November 17, 2025, is anticipated to ascertain the facts of the situation on the ground in favour of a fair hearing.
