A moment of reconciliation and unity hit the Igbo-speaking community in Lagos State, accompanied by a new peaceful transition of leadership as Chief Sunday Eze voluntarily steps down for Chief Sunday Udeh to occupy the position of President General, following a consent judgement obtained by the Board of Trustees. This symbolises the restoration of peace within the Igbo-speaking community.
The decision was made at a meeting attended by the BOT Chairman of the Igbo Speaking Community led by Dr Jonathan Nnaji, legal adviser Prince I. Nwafuru, and various stakeholders. The consent judgement ended a four-year litigation between Chief Sunday Eze and Chief Sunday Udeh.
The meeting held at the headquarters of the Igbo Speaking Community in Surulere on Friday, July 18th, 2025, was also attended by the two factions of the Igbo-speaking community led by Chief Udeh and Eze; members of the Council of Ezendigbo led by Eze Chika Nwokedi; leaders from various LCDA in the state; and other stakeholders, including women. The meeting concluded with Chief Sunday Udeh awaiting the inauguration of new executives.
Dr Nnaji, the BOT Chairman, informed the stakeholders that the meeting’s goal was to let them know that the BOT had finally obtained a consent judgement, putting a stop to the lawsuit between the Chief Sunday Eze and Chief Sunday Udeh groups that had begun four years prior.
Barrister Nwafuru, the BOT legal counsel, was then instructed by Dr Nnaji to read the court ruling to the stakeholders, which included the following:
*The position that is expected to be contested is only the position of the President-General, and the eligible candidates are the two factional President-Generals and any other candidates that can be identified by the parties.
*Where the President emerges from one faction, the other faction shall produce the Vice President, the Secretary General and the Treasurer, provided that where the positions of the 1st Vice President, the Secretary General and the Treasurer are unopposed, the contestants who purchased forms shall be declared irrespective of the factions they come from.
*Other positions shall be shared equitably between the two factions, and the elected and shared positions shall form the new Executive of the Community.
*The Peace Committee Members shall sign this Terms of Settlement signifying their acceptance.
*The cost of forms for the election is to be determined by the Electoral Committee.
*Each President General and the Executive of the two factions hereby confirm that they have had their first term of four years.
*The parties hereby agree that all actions, suits, claims and/or counterclaims, petitions, motions, injunctions and/or other liabilities sought or obtained by any of the parties and pending before this Honourable Court or any other court or adjudicating body in respect of, relating to or arising from the subject matter of this suit shall abate upon the entry of the terms of settlement herein as the judgement of this Honourable Court.
*Any other suit filed by any of the parties in court or elsewhere shall be withdrawn and automatically abates upon entering of these terms of settlement as a judgement of a court.
*The Parties hereby undertake that none of them, their agents, privies, directors or anyone claiming through or for them shall institute any other legal action, suits, claims and/or counterclaims against each other in respect of the subject matter of this Terms of Settlement.
*That the terms should be the consent judgement of this honourable court.
*All terms, provisions, conditions and covenants herein shall be binding and shall inure to the benefit of the respective successors and assigns of the parties in this suit. The officers executing these Terms of Settlement do so as agents or attorneys of their respective factions and covenant and represent that they have complete authority to enter into and execute these Terms of Settlement.
*These Terms of Settlement constitute the entire agreement between the Parties and supersede any prior oral and/or written agreements between them in respect of this subject matter, and there are no representations, understandings or agreements relating to the subject matter thereof that are not expressed herein.
*The parties shall bear their respective costs of this action.
*This Terms of Settlement is made in good faith by both parties.”
The position of president general, held by Chief Udeh, has been decided upon based on the consent judgement and Chief Eze’s resignation, according to Dr Nnaji. Other positions will be applied appropriately and decided upon following the BOT’s meeting with the committee to harmonise the electoral process.
Nnaji pointed out that there are still unresolved concerns, such as the unity of Ndieze under the auspices of the Council of Ndieze, which was established in 2003, and the profiling of Ndieze that has not yet been acknowledged by the BOT. He thanked Chief Sunday Eze and the stakeholders for resigning, which made the BOT’s job simpler. He also stated that the new executives would be revealed once the committee that was chosen had unified other concerns.
Chief Sunday Udeh referred to Chief Sunday Eze as the Jonathan of the Igbo-speaking community and praised him for resigning so that peace might return to the Igbo-speaking society. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the BOT, particularly to Dr Nnaji, for his tireless efforts to bring peace back to the Igbo-speaking society. In order to create a robust and dynamic community in the state, Chief Udeh pledged to bring together all members of the Igbo-speaking communities spread throughout the state’s 20 local government areas.
Chief Sunday Eze clarified that he made the sacrifice of resigning in order to restore peace in the village, and he did not notify his group of his choice beforehand. Since Chief Sunday Eze’s group will create the Vice President, General Secretary, and Treasury, and Chief Udeh will generate the remaining members to form the new executives, his group did not entirely lose out.
After many years of conflict, Eze Chika Nwokedi expressed joy that the Igbo-speaking community is now at peace. He clarified that he had tried everything to settle the issue, even offering both parties N2.5 million, but they had turned it down. He said that the stakeholders, including Dr Nnaji, the chairman of the BOT, applauded Chief Sunday Eze’s voluntary resignation without receiving any compensation. He also had productive talks with Dr Nnaji about how to establish enduring peace among the Igbo-speaking community in Lagos State.
