In a statement made by human rights advocate Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, he expresses concerns over the poor condition of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, commissioned by President Tinubu and overseen by the Minister of Works, David Umahi. The road, he says, has deteriorated rapidly since its commissioning, raising concerns about its construction quality and the contract process.
Iche said it is a known fact that poor road construction in Nigeria is a widespread issue with significant economic and social consequences. Factors like substandard materials, inadequate maintenance, and flawed construction practices contribute to premature road failures, leading to increased transportation costs, safety hazards, and economic losses.
He noted that the project was awarded without proper bidding, leading to inflated costs and substandard work. He further said,
“The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, commissioned by President Tinubu and Minister of Works Dave Umahi, is dead on arrival and a death trap poised to endanger the lives of Nigerians, especially the future road users, if not addressed.”
“A few months after embarking on the project, the road was commissioned, and now it is evident through a viral video that the improper sand filling of the sea is collapsing beneath the constructed road, causing a sinking dent. We are aware that Nigerians protested the contract’s high capital intensity when it was approved, despite the fact that there are other, more pressing situations that require this kind of finance.”
How is it possible for the government to award such a contract without holding an open bidding process and without inviting other construction companies to submit quotes in order to ascertain expertise? The government and its business associates made a deliberate effort to impose the fictitious and uncontested sum for that coastline route running in the billions yet lacking in quality.”
“President Tinubu to sack the minister of works without delay for affirming that the road project is going according to plan but lying. This is allegedly one out of many low-quality roads awarded by the minister of works. It will be tragic if the failing Lagos-Calabar coastal route road work is not fixed in the coming months.”
“How can such a high-profile road project be carried out without a drainage system? Everyone can see in the widely circulated video that the foundation of the road is collapsing due to the incompetent and unprofessional job carried out by the construction company awarded this project.”
“In Nigeria, for some reasons the government just gambles with everything, including people’s lives. If the base of this road can be eaten off in a few months of commissioning, what will happen in the next one year or two years? The whole road, I presume, would have totally collapsed by then. This is one out of many other concerning situations happening in Nigeria that the government keeps silent about rather than immediately addressing.”
“Keeping silent over matters that concern the general public is tantamount to condoning recklessness. It’s high time President Tinubu appointed ministers and other appointees not based on political interest or one’s affiliation to the ruling party or the governor’s influence but based on expertise in order to mitigate the shortcomings now observed.”
“The Nigerian government is known for nonchalance towards the citizen’s welfare, as seen in the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project involving billions of dollars that would have been beneficial to solving other more relevant issues Nigeria is facing but was channelled into a wasteful venture.”
Iche calls on President Tinubu to sack the Minister of Works, citing incompetence and unprofessionalism. Moreover, prosecute those involved in the project to hold them accountable and serve as a deterrent to other road project awardees, Iche added. #
