The late former president Olusegun Obasanjo commended his late wife Stella for playing a crucial part in getting him out of jail.
Following his release from prison by AbdulSalam Abubakar’s government, Obasanjo became president after having been imprisoned by General Sani Abacha’s regime.
Before his death during his second tenure, Edo State’s Stella Obasanjo, who pushed for his release, was appointed First Lady.

Speaking recently on his incarceration, former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized the important role his late wife, Stella, played in securing his release.

Recounting his imprisonment under General Sani Abacha’s rule, Obasanjo said he was accused of taking part in a coup. After Abacha’s death, which created the conditions for his presidency, he was released during the rule of AbdulSalam Abubakar.

Edo State native Stella Obasanjo, who was a strong supporter of his liberation, was his first lady till her tragic passing during his second term.

In his thoughts, the 87-year-old praised Stella’s unflinching commitment, writing, “My late wife did everything in her power to make sure I survived prison.” She was in France, Vatican City, and other places. When I got out of prison, I had it all. He went on to say, “The role she played would be worthy of any amount of honor.”

In expressing his sincere gratitude for the honor bestowed upon Stella by the construction of a hospital, Obasanjo declared, “I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public life.”

He also thanked Governor Godwin Obaseki for his successful leadership and praised his efforts to the hospital program. He also reflected on his association with former Governor John Odigie Oyegun, whom he considered to be an exceptional permanent secretary.

“First-class treatment for any ailment is guaranteed with this hospital,” he stated. “The governor should be treated with more grace. With a structure like this, I can claim that the governor got off to a good start and is doing well now.
