NGO Urges Policy Frameworks to Consider PWDs

1 min read

Georgetown Global Health, an NGO, has urged governments at all levels to include people with disabilities (PWDs) in the policy-making process at every stage, from designing programs to implementing and assessing them. The organization claims that doing so will guarantee that the programs are responsive to the priorities and needs of the PWD community.

This was said by MaryAnn Emmanuel, a Georgetown Global Health USAID Nigeria Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Officer, at a training for stakeholders in Bauchi State as part of events to commemorate the 16-day activism on GBV. The event was organized by Georgetown Global Health USAID Nigeria in collaboration with the Bauchi Ministry of Health and the State2Stste Bauchi Field office.

She said that PWDs are more likely to experience violence, exploitation, and abuse in their communities and families. She also mentioned that a 2020 report by the Network of Women with Disabilities in Nigeria found that 68% of women with disabilities had been victims of gender-based violence, which includes emotional, financial, sexual, and physical abuse.
