MURIC requests that the Lagos State government issue a circular allowing hijab to be worn in public schools in the state
2 min readThe Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has requested that the Lagos State government issue a circular allowing hijab to be worn in public schools in the state.
The group’s request was based on allegations that some teachers in the state’s public schools mistreat female Muslim students who wear hijab.
Professor Ishaq Akintola, the director of MURIC, made the demand in a statement.
“Female Muslim students are daily humiliated, persecuted, and denied Allah-given fundamental human rights in Lagos public schools because they wear hijab,” the statement reads.
“Despite the fact that a court decision in favor of hijab use is on the books, school officials use the lack of an official circular approving or unbanning hijab use to infringe on Allah-given fundamental human rights of Muslim girls.”
The number of violations and abuses, as well as the order in which they occurred, is alarming.

“Female Muslim students wear hijab at home, but remove it at the school gates and tuck it inside their bags, in deference to the schools’ prohibition on wearing it on school grounds.”
“It is therefore clear that the problems are with the school principals, headmasters, and teachers.”
“This puts the Muslim girl-child, her parents, Islamic organizations, and the Lagos Muslim community in a difficult situation.” The Lagos State government is responsible for resolving this impasse by being transparent and issuing a circular.
