A military junta in Gabon has dissolved the Cabinet, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, and the Gabonese Elections Centre.

This follows the dissolution of the democratic government in Gabon, hours after taking over power from President Ali Bongo.

In a televised address on Wednesday morning, the coup leaders said they represented all Security and Defence forces in the Central African nation under the aegis of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI).

The CTRI said it had dissolved the Cabinet, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, and the Gabonese Elections Centre.

The junta also announced the cancellation of the results of last Saturday’s presidential election, which Bongo was declared the winner.

Bongo has been in power since 2009, when he succeeded his father, Omar Bongo, who ruled Gabon for 42 years.
