Eze Chika Nwokedi, the Ezendigbo of Ijegun Ijeododo and Chairman of the Council of Ndieze Igbo Lagos State, has emphasised the importance of peace and unity among the Igbo people and other tribes in Nigeria. Urges all Ndigbo in Lagos to be peace ambassadors wherever they go, as he noted that the nation’s progress and development depends on fostering peace and unity.
He made this remark at an event gathering of newly appointed distinguished persons who received chieftain titles during the New Yam Festival and are due to be granted chieftain certificates.
According to Nwokedi, Okpoko 1 of Obodoukwu, during the presentation event, urged Ndigbo to foster harmony and understanding amongst themselves and other tribes, stressing the value of peaceful coexistence. Nwokedi stressed that the Igbo values of resilience and hard work should be complemented by a commitment to peace and harmony.
“Every Igbo has a reputation for resilience and hard work, and these values should be complemented by a commitment to peace and harmony,” he said, advising incoming chiefs to be good ambassadors to their families and community at large.
Eze Nwokedi, who is also the Eze Ndigbo of the Ijegun and Ijeododo communities, further advised Ndigbo to be aware of their behaviour and act in a way that fosters understanding and peace. He urged newly appointed chiefs to be peace ambassadors, highlighting that the nation’s progress depends on harmonious coexistence.
His message to the new chiefs was that their honour would bring additional honour and will yield good benefits from the land they dwell in if they stand for the truth and obey the laws and regulations that govern the land. Along with thanking his cabinet for fostering peace and harmony, Nwokedi also thanked everyone who helped the Ndigbo community at the New Yam Festival.
He remarked, “I pray that God will continue to protect and bless the Ndigbo people in whatever they do, and that the honour bestowed upon the new chiefs will not bring shame and disgrace but rather will bring more honour, and we shall all eat the fruit of this land.” Eze C.C. Nwokedi went on to thank his cabinet colleagues for making sure that Ndigbo, both inside and outside of the Ijegun and Ijedodo communities, coexist peacefully and harmoniously with the Yoruba community. He urged them to avoid anything that could lead to social unrest.
In appreciation, Nze Collins Nwosu (Onowu Obi Udo) praised Eze Chika Nwokedi for seeing him as deserving and bestowing a chieftaincy title. With the certificate in hand, he said he will make sure that peace and togetherness remain his guiding principles and help the Ndigbo community in Lagos State flourish.
Hon. Chief Mrs Elizabeth Nwakata (Akwa Ugo Nwanyi Lagos), while expressing gratitude, pledged to keep helping widows, the underprivileged, and women. She assured Eze Nwokedi of her unwavering support for the advancement of the Ndigbo in Lagos State and thanked him for the honour and opportunity.
Nwokedi’s call underscores the significant role Igbo people can play in promoting stability and peace in their host communities. The event highlighted the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence, reflecting positively on Nigeria’s cultural diversity and social fabric.
However, the awarding of certificates was the event’s high point.
