After Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, declared his interest in running for governor, Governor Godwin Obaseki pledged to support what is just and fair.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Obaseki stated that he would endorse Shaibu to succeed him in 2024.

The governor restated his previous claim that Shaibu’s future would be decided by the state’s citizens.

Obaseki claims, “E declare for himself now, no be me go decide whether my deputy, na Edo people go sit down and decide.” They said, “This deputy, are you ready to take over as governor of the state?”

“Let’s examine his background and any prior experiences, if any, and if not, the Edo people will determine how we will conduct the governorship—whether it be on a turn-by-turn basis or based on equality, fairness, and justice. to remark, “Well, this is what people have done before.”

“As the leader, I’ll take a seat and keep an eye on things. My hands are not available to accomplish what is just, fair, or will bring Edo together.

Obaseki made the following statement in response to the godfatherism in politics: “Everyone needs nurturing and mentoring, but not to the extent of teleguiding you.” He can advise and assist you in making decisions, but ultimately, democracy requires that the people choose their own leaders.”
