CP Yemi Oyeniyi Unveils Strategy to Tackle Crime, Enforce Discipline

The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi John Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips has pledged to prioritise the safety of lives and property while introducing reforms aimed at strengthening security across the state.
Speaking during his inaugural press briefing on March 1, 2026, in Asaba, Oyeniyi, the 24th Commissioner of Police in the state, expressed gratitude to Olatunji Rilwan Disu for the confidence reposed in him to lead the command.
He described Delta State as a critical economic hub requiring a robust security framework to sustain its commercial and industrial activities, noting that his administration would confront prevailing security challenges with renewed focus.
The police chief acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, Aina Adesola, stating that his leadership would consolidate on existing gains while addressing emerging threats.
Oyeniyi disclosed plans to restructure and streamline tactical operations in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police. According to him, the move is aimed at eliminating duplication of duties, improving accountability, and ensuring intelligence-driven policing.
He identified kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related violence as priority areas, stressing that enhanced coordination of tactical teams would enable faster and more effective responses to criminal activities.
The CP also issued a strong warning against indiscipline and human rights violations among officers, insisting that professionalism and accountability would be strictly enforced within the command.
“We will not tolerate abuse of human rights or unprofessional conduct. Officers must operate within the law and treat members of the public with respect,” he said.
Oyeniyi further emphasised a shift towards proactive policing, with increased community engagement, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger collaboration with stakeholders, including the state government, traditional rulers, and community leaders.
He called on residents to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information, reiterating the importance of public cooperation in crime prevention.
The police commissioner also assured members of the media of a professional working relationship, recognising their role in informing the public.
He charged officers and men of the command to uphold discipline, professionalism, and the rule of law, describing them as non-negotiable standards.
Oyeniyi reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a safer Delta State, stating that his leadership would be guided by service, justice, and the protection of all residents.
