In a broadcast on Channels Television, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, expressed skepticism about the reported attendance of 1411 delegates accompanying the president to COP28. He cast doubt on the accuracy of the information, asserting that the actual turnout contradicted the figures provided. Lawal highlighted the significant disparity, noting that not even a quarter of the reported individuals were present at the event. Additionally, he brought attention to over 50 individuals mentioned in the report who were confirmed to be absent from COP28.

Lawal raised concerns about potential misinformation or inaccuracies in media coverage, urging a meticulous evaluation of such narratives for accurate understanding. He questioned the credibility of the information presented in the story by emphasizing the discrepancies between the reported figures and the actual attendance at the conference. Furthermore, Lawal disclosed that the count of individuals from the private sector outnumbered the count of government officials in attendance.

In his words, “I saw the figures, the figures for the ministry; I just laughed. With the number they gave us, it didn’t even come with one quarter of that. I know of people they’ve mentioned who are not even here. So many people they have mentioned are not here. So I think that, you know, when you see a story coming out, the first thing you’re going to assess the story is on the basis of, What is the truth behind the story? Because I can tell you that I’ve seen more than 50 names that they put in that story that did not even come here.”
