Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the First Lady of Ondo State, has addressed the removal of road divider blocks in Akure, referred to by some residents as the “Wall of Jericho.” These blocks were originally installed by her husband, Governor Akeredolu, along Oja-oba, Adesida road, with the intention of preventing reckless driving and reducing accidents.
Responding to the jubilant reactions of Akure citizens to the removal, Mrs. Anyanwu-Akeredolu took to her Facebook page to clarify the purpose behind the “Wall of Jericho.” She emphasized that the installation was not meant for amusement but was implemented for safety reasons, aiming to curb irresponsible driving practices and enhance overall road safety.
In her statement, the First Lady acknowledged the public response and highlighted the primary focus on safety, reinforcing the notion that the road divider blocks were a precautionary measure rather than a source of entertainment for the citizens of Akure.

During the Christmas celebration, Acting Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of Ondo State issued an order for the removal of certain road divider blocks, facilitating easier pedestrian crossing between the two sides of the road. As the barricades were being dismantled, there was a spontaneous outburst of joy from locals who expressed their appreciation for the acting governor. In a festive atmosphere, they celebrated by singing praises for Ayedatiwa and playfully dubbed the road divider blocks as the “Walls of Jericho.”
Amidst the process of taking down the barriers, the jubilant response from the community underscored their approval of the acting governor’s decision. The removal of these road divider blocks became a symbol of accessibility and garnered positive attention from the locals.
