By Naomi Onome

The Delta State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into a violent clash involving supporters at a political rally organised by the Obedient/OK Movement in support of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asaba, which left one person dead and five others injured.

The incident occurred on Saturday, November 7, 2026, along Nnebisi Road, Asaba.

The Police Command, in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said it had received intelligence reports indicating the likelihood of violence ahead of the rally and subsequently invited the organisers to a security meeting.

According to the statement, the organisers were briefed on the identified security threats and advised against conducting an open road procession. They were also encouraged to hold their political activities at a designated venue where adequate security arrangements could be provided.

However, the organisers allegedly disregarded the security advice and proceeded with the road procession.

The statement disclosed that the violent incident occurred at about 12:15 p.m., resulting in the death of one person and injuries to five others. The identities of the victims had yet to be established as of the time of the statement.

It added that police operatives, upon receiving a distress call, promptly mobilised to the scene and evacuated the injured victims to the hospital for medical attention.

Security was subsequently reinforced in the affected area to prevent further breakdown of law and order, while investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the clash and identify those responsible.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, psc, mnips, condemned the violence, stressing that political parties remain free to conduct lawful campaigns and other political activities.

He, however, urged political parties and their supporters to avoid road processions in the interest of public safety and always liaise with the Police ahead of political gatherings to enable adequate security arrangements.
